What Is a TPIN and Why Do You Need One?
A TPIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) is a unique 10-digit computer-generated number issued by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) to every registered taxpayer in Zambia — individuals, companies, partnerships, NGOs, churches, and diplomatic missions alike.
Think of it as Zambia's economic identity number. Just as your National Registration Card (NRC) identifies you as a citizen, your TPIN identifies you as a taxpayer and economic participant. It links every financial transaction you make — every tax return, every bank account, every business registration — to a single verified identity in ZRA's national database.
The TPIN was introduced as part of Zambia's tax modernisation programme and is now the single gateway to participation in Zambia's formal economy. Without one, you are effectively locked out of banking, government services, and formal business.
Who Must Register for a TPIN in Zambia?
TPIN registration is mandatory for a wide range of individuals and entities. Per the ZRA FAQ and the Income Tax Act, a TPIN is issued to:
- Individuals in employmentAny employed person in Zambia, including employees whose PAYE is handled by their employer. Even if you pay zero income tax, you need a TPIN to open a bank account or file returns.
- Self-employed and sole tradersAnyone running their own business, freelancing, farming commercially, or operating as a consultant. Required before applying for any business licence or registering for Turnover Tax, VAT, or Income Tax.
- Limited companies and corporationsAll companies incorporated under the Companies Act and registered with PACRA. Post-2020 companies get a TPIN automatically on PACRA registration (see section below).
- Partnerships and joint venturesBusiness partnerships require their own TPIN separate from the individual partners' TPINs.
- NGOs, churches, clubs, and associationsNon-Government Organisations, missionary bodies, labour unions, clubs, and societies registered with the Registrar of Societies all require a TPIN.
- Non-residents conducting business in ZambiaForeign individuals and companies with taxable activities in Zambia, including expats, diplomatic missions, and foreign businesses with Zambian operations.
- All bank account holdersA Bank of Zambia directive requires all bank account holders in Zambia to have a TPIN. You cannot open or maintain a bank account without one.
Everything You Use Your TPIN For
Once issued, your TPIN becomes the reference number for virtually every formal financial and regulatory transaction in Zambia. The table below covers every major use:
| Use Case | Mandatory? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Opening a bank account | Mandatory | Bank of Zambia directive. No TPIN, no account — applies to all commercial banks and mobile money operators. |
| Filing any ZRA tax return | Mandatory | PAYE, VAT, Income Tax, Turnover Tax — all require a TPIN as the primary account identifier. |
| Registering a motor vehicle | Mandatory | TPIN is a prerequisite for vehicle registration and transfer at Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA). |
| Obtaining a Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) | Mandatory | A TCC — needed for tenders, bank loans, and licences — is issued against your TPIN on the ZRA portal. |
| Bidding for government tenders | Mandatory | All public procurement in Zambia requires a valid TPIN and current TCC as part of the bid package. |
| Registering for VAT, PAYE, or Income Tax | Mandatory | You cannot register for any tax type with ZRA without a TPIN — it is the prerequisite for all secondary registrations. |
| Accessing ZRA e-Services portal | Mandatory | The portal login at portal.zra.org.zm requires your TPIN as the username. |
| Applying for import/export permits | Required | ZRA Customs Services requires TPIN for all import and export declarations. |
| Making VAT refund claims | Mandatory | VAT refund applications filed on the ZRA portal are processed against your TPIN account. |
| Registering with NAPSA as an employer | Mandatory | NAPSA employer registration requires a TPIN and ZRA Certificate of Registration. |
Check If You Already Have a TPIN (Before Registering)
Many Zambians and businesses already have a TPIN without realising it — especially if they've ever opened a bank account, registered a vehicle, or had an employer who registered them with ZRA. Before starting a new registration, always check first. Duplicate registrations cause complications.
🔍 How to Find Your Existing TPIN
The ZRA Taxpayer Search is free, instant, and requires no login. You only need your NRC or passport number.
Your search results will show your TPIN number, your registered name, your registration date, and your status — Active or Inactive. If your status shows Inactive, you need to visit a ZRA office with your NRC and supporting documents to reactivate your TPIN before you can use ZRA e-Services.
Did PACRA Automatically Give You a TPIN?
This is one of the most useful things to know about TPIN registration in Zambia — and almost nobody writes about it clearly.
If your company or business name was registered with PACRA after 2020, ZRA automatically generates a TPIN the moment your PACRA registration is finalised. You do not need to register separately.
Here is what happens:
You complete your PACRA registration
Either online at pacra.org.zm or in person at a PACRA office. Your company receives its Certificate of Incorporation or Business Name Certificate.
ZRA automatically creates your TPIN
PACRA and ZRA share registration data. As soon as PACRA processes your registration, ZRA generates a TPIN linked to your new entity.
Check your email for ZRA login credentials
ZRA sends your TPIN and portal login credentials to the email address used during PACRA registration. Check your spam folder — this email often lands there. Log into portal.zra.org.zm to complete your ZRA profile and confirm your TPIN.
Fast Track TPIN Registration for Individuals
For individual taxpayers — employed Zambians, sole traders, self-employed professionals, and bank account holders — ZRA offers a simplified Fast Track TPIN Registration process that takes around 10–15 minutes online.
This is the quickest route to getting your TPIN and is available 24/7 at portal.zra.org.zm.
Go to portal.zra.org.zm
Visit the official ZRA e-Services portal. Do not use third-party sites — always use the official portal to protect your personal data.
Select "Get a TPIN" → "Fast Track TPIN Registration"
Look for the Get a TPIN link under the Registrations section. For individuals, specifically select Fast Track TPIN Registration — this is ZRA's simplified individual registration path and avoids the longer business registration form.
Enter the security CAPTCHA
Type or select the security code shown on screen. This prevents automated submissions. Click Proceed to continue.
Select "Individual" as your taxpayer type
The portal will ask whether you are an Individual or a Non-Individual (business entity). Select Individual for the Fast Track process.
Fill in your personal details
Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your NRC (including any middle names), your NRC number, date of birth, residential address, active mobile number, and email address. Accuracy is critical — errors will delay processing and may require a ZRA office visit to correct.
Upload your NRC and proof of address
Scan or photograph both sides of your NRC clearly. Also upload a proof of address (utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement in your name). Files should be in PDF, JPG, or PNG format. Keep individual file sizes reasonable — very large files sometimes fail to upload.
Submit and receive your TPIN
Review every field, then submit. ZRA will send your TPIN number and portal login credentials (username and password) to your email and phone. Processing is usually immediate or within 24 hours for complete applications. Your TPIN is permanent — keep it safe.

TPIN Registration for Businesses and Organisations
Businesses, partnerships, NGOs, and other non-individual entities use a full TPIN registration form rather than the Fast Track process. This captures additional information about the entity's legal structure, business activities, directors, and estimated turnover.
The process for non-individuals is the same portal — portal.zra.org.zm — but you select Non-Individual when prompted for taxpayer type. You will then be asked to specify your entity type:
- Certificate of IncorporationIssued by PACRA. Must be valid and show current company name and registration number.
- NRC or Passport of all directorsAll persons currently listed as directors on the PACRA register. Foreign directors must provide a passport.
- Proof of physical business addressTenancy agreement, ZESCO bill, LWSC bill, or local authority rate clearance in the company name. A P.O. Box is not accepted.
- Business Name Registration CertificateIssued by PACRA (BN Form III or equivalent). Shows the registered business name and trading activities.
- NRC of the owner / proprietorThe person in whose name the business is registered. Passport accepted for non-citizens.
- Proof of business addressUtility bill or tenancy agreement at the business premises.
- Certificate of Registration from Registrar of SocietiesOr equivalent registration certificate from the relevant authority (NGO Board, Ministry of Community Development, etc.).
- Constitution or Memorandum & ArticlesThe organisation's governing document showing its objectives and leadership structure.
- NRC of current office bearersChairperson and Secretary (or equivalent leadership roles) must provide their NRCs.
- Proof of registered addressPhysical address of the organisation's principal office.
- Certificate of Incorporation (home country)Certified copy of the company's registration certificate from its country of incorporation.
- Passport of authorised representative in ZambiaThe person acting on behalf of the non-resident entity in Zambia.
- Board resolution or power of attorneyAuthorising the Zambian representative to register and act for the entity.
- Proof of Zambian address or tax agent detailsEither a Zambian business address or contact details for a registered ZRA tax agent who will represent the entity.
Manual Registration at a ZRA Office
If you experience difficulties with the online portal — connectivity issues, CAPTCHA failures, document upload errors, or account problems — you can register manually at any ZRA office in Zambia. Bring physical copies (originals plus photocopies) of all documents listed for your entity type above.
ZRA offices where you can register for a TPIN in person:
For manual registration, complete ZRA Form TPIN-1 (Application for TPIN and Tax Registration). This form can be downloaded from zra.org.zm or collected at any ZRA office. Complete it in block capital letters and attach copies of all required documents for your entity type.
After Registration — What Comes Next
Once you have your TPIN, it is the key to everything else in Zambia's tax and financial system. Here is the natural next-steps roadmap depending on your situation:
Open a business bank account
Take your TPIN certificate (printed or shown digitally), Certificate of Incorporation, and directors' NRCs to your bank of choice. Most Zambian banks require your TPIN as the first document in the account-opening checklist.
Register for the right tax types
Log into the ZRA portal with your TPIN and register for the taxes that apply to your situation: VAT (if turnover exceeds K800k/year), PAYE (if you employ staff), Income Tax (always), or Turnover Tax (small businesses under K5M). See our VAT Registration Guide for the next step.
Apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC)
A TCC proves you are current on all ZRA obligations. It is required for government tenders, many bank loans, and business licences. Apply for it on the ZRA portal once your tax registrations are active and all returns are filed.
Register with NAPSA and NHIMA as an employer
If you have employees, you must register as an employer with NAPSA (pension) and NHIMA (health insurance) — both require your TPIN. See our NAPSA Calculator to understand your monthly contribution obligations.
